DAVID LLOYD MAISH, 76 Ex-teacher strived to make history vivid
[Chicago Tribune - Final Edition] - Joan Giangrasse Kates - December 30, 2004 - (Copyright 2004 by the Chicago Tribune)

During a teaching career that spanned four decades, David Lloyd Maish not only encouraged his students to learn about history but to understand its relevance in today's world. "Teaching to him was more about being engaging, not just spewing facts," said his daughter Peg. "He drew things out of his students and helped them connect the dots. He didn't teach them what to think, but rather how to think."

Mr. Maish, 76, of North Riverside, formerly of Countryside, an Army veteran and retired social studies teacher at Lyons Township High School in La Grange, died of leukemia Thursday, Dec. 23, in Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. Born in Frankfort, Ind., Mr. Maish spent his early childhood in Ft. Wayne, where he lived in his family's apartment above a grocery store, which they owned and operated. When he was 14, his father died in a fire when the furnace in the store exploded one night. He later lived with his mother and sister in Bloomington before enlisting in the Army. From 1946 to 1947, Mr. Maish served with the Army in Germany, where family members said he was commissioned a junior officer at age 19. He later headed a mounted cavalry unit, a peacekeeping force charged with stabilizing the border between Italy and Yugoslavia. "He shared many stories about his Army days, along with dozens of photos of him and his trusty steed, Willy," said his daughter.

After his military discharge, Mr. Maish returned to Bloomington, where he received a bachelor's degree in journalism and a master's degree in education from Indiana University. It was during that time he met his wife, Carolyn, to whom he was married for 42 years before she died in 1999. After teaching in Bloomington and Rochester, Minn., Mr. Maish moved with his family to Countryside in 1960 and joined the faculty at Lyons Township High School in La Grange. There he taught social studies and history for the next 28 years, also serving as the president of the Lyons Township High School faculty association before retiring in 1988. "I had a lot of good teachers in high school, but Mr. Maish was my favorite," said Bill Derrah, a 1977 graduate of Lyons Township High School, who hopes to pursue a teaching career in the spring. "He taught me how to think like a historian, as opposed to saying 'here's the story, facts and dates, now go memorize it.'"

Family members said a key highlight of Mr. Maish's career was being chosen to serve as a reader for the national Advanced Placement tests in history, which are taken by high school seniors seeking college course credit. He also taught for a summer in Agana, Guam, as part of a teaching exchange program in 1970. Other survivors include a son, Phillip; a daughter, Julia; a sister, Leanna Riggins; and a grandchild.
9/30/05 Earl C. Floyd Jr., 83, of Bloomington, died Wednesday, Sept 28, 2005. He was professor emeritus of the IU School of Education and taught Art at University High School from 1955-1960. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie; one daughter; one son; two brothers; one sister; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.

8/15/05 Becky Bobilya Gregory, who is receiving reservations for the upcoming October 29 reunion sends this: - Subject: Surprise Reunion Response

"I just got a phone call from Princeton, NJ, from Monica Chen Yu. She was a graduate student at IU and taught Chinese at UHS one year, 1963-64. She has no idea how we traced her but she is indeed delighted. She will not be able to attend the reunion, because she and her husband have to be in D.C. all Fall for something special he is doing.

However, she has kept all these years a newspaper clipping from May 10, 1963, with a picture of her, John Ray, other administrators, and several students, including Lynn Householder, Jan Thurston, Bill Burhans, et al. She is making a copy of this clipping and sending it to me. She would like for me to give copies to any of her students who might be interested.

It is her understanding that teaching Chinese in a midwestern high school in the early 60's was unique, and that she was a pioneer in the field. She had to walk from the IU campus to 10th & Bypass to teach the Chinese class, and she was not very involved with UHS faculty, staff, or student life other than her class.

It was such fun to share in her pleasure at being included in our All School reunion mailing!!!!

Becky PS Feel free to share whatever you'd like of this information.
4/11/05 Fritzi Strudell's ('43) grand niece emailed to say: "Fritzie is my great aunt, my great grandfather's sister. She received her bachelor's degree in education in 1941. I'm not sure if she furthered her education until 1943? Aunt Fritzie passed away on March 5, 1979 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Not sure how accurate this information is but 'the family' story is that she went on to become director of nursing at Milwaukee General Hospital and helped write the nursing manual for the hospital."
4/22/05 This list has grown considerably because of lists from Commencement Programs from '52, '57, '63, and '67. Also, I have seen the Jordannus for most years. If you have a commencement program you can scan for me (or let me borrow to scan), please let me know. --- Margaret ---- as of 2017: David
5/14/03 Fred Mills, UHS art teacher in the early '50s, has a web page, Fred V. Mills Originals -- there was a link here, but it is no longer valid -- Dave, Sept 2020
3/6/03 Dave Campaigne '60 writes: "I just got word from my sister, Claudia, class of '63, that Jo Spear [d 2011] is in the cardiac rehab area of the Bloomington Hospital for a couple of weeks following heart surgery. Someone in Bloomington can probably provide the address if anyone would like to send a card. I'm sure she's still too tough to let anything like this slow her down for long."

Becky Bobilya Gregory has the hospital address and may have other information. -- Well, Becky died a couple of years ago -- Dave, Sept 2020
2/27/03 Greg Temple ('59) contacted Robert Michael - and reports:

Dear Fellow-Pigs:

Thanks to help from web-wizard and buddy Dave Campaigne (U-School '60), I was able to trace and talk on the phone at length with Dr. Robert E. ( "Mr. Michael" ) Michael. Robert, a 4-time grandfather in semi-retirement, is well and -- as ever -- stirring stuff in Manchester, NH. He remembers his three years (1957-1959) in U-School's English department both well and fondly.

Overcoming some initial jitters, born of hero-worship, I rattled off to him the names of a half-dozen or so U-School peers. After nearly 35 years, "Mr. Michael" remembered each personally, warmly and in detail. And then he named another half dozen, with specific recollection and inquiry about the progress of each. As I recounted what I knew about each of you, Robert reacted out of what was obviously deep affection. He recalled our times together at U-School as "among the best of my life," and he, like the rest of us, has endured quite some times since.

I asked him if I could share his addresses with you, and he responded instantly and openly, that I should, although he warned he was only a computer semi-literate. He wants to hear from and renew friendships and acquaintances with you. And, he will tell you expressively, he loves you.

Bests, and get to corresponding,

Bruce/Greg Temple (U-School '59)

[However, Bruce/Greg did not include any contact information! - or Margaret did not put it on the web page.
Anyway, we have Mr Michael listed as deceased, but without a date.-- Dave. Sept 2020]
1/9/03 Jerry McIntosh said: I taught mathematics at University School Junior/Senior High School from 1958 to 1963.
